A rich man once came to Jesus and asked Him, "Good master what must I do to have eternal life?"

We may deny it or try to ignore it but this question sums up the most important question you will ever ask.  What do I need to do to go to Heaven?  The truth is you can't do anything to earn your way to Heaven.  God did all the work for you.  He loves you too much to make your salvation depend on you.

You see, unlike God you're a sinner.  Don't feel bad, we're all sinners.  None of us is perfect but we console ourselves in our sinfulness by comparing ourselves to each other.  God doesn't do that.  He compares you to Himself and the verdict for every human that has ever lived apart from Jesus Christ is always the same: you're a sinner.  As soon as you acknowledge this you're on you're way.  (Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.")

Understand God loves you but your sin has a cost.  God's holiness demands death for any and all that sinned. (Romans 6:23 says, "The wages of sin is death.")  The death the Bible speaks of is not just physical death but eternal death, separation from God.  That's why we age, get sick, and die: sin did that.  Ultimately the final punishment for sin following physical death is eternal separation from God in a place the Bible calls Hell.

But the verse doesn't end there, it continues, "...but the gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE."  What a joy.  God has a gift for you, something you desperately need and cannot buy, eternal life.

But how can that be if the wages of sin is death?  The answer is God loved you enough to provide a substitute for you.  Someone that would die for you, take your place and suffer the punishment that our sin earned us.  His name is Jesus Christ.  Romans 5:8 says, "But God commendeth His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died FOR US."  What a glorious message.  I don't have to experience eternal separation from God in a place the Bible says burns with an unquenchable fire.

If God has a gift for me, how do I get it?  How do I receive this gift of eternal life?  Romans 10:9 tells us, "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead thou shalt be saved."  You see, God is only looking for you to believe that Jesus did everything necessary for you to be saved, that is, to go to Heaven.  Confessing means I acknowledge I'm a sinner, I deserve death, I want Heaven and I believe Jesus died to pay for my sin.  It isn't any more difficult than that.  Believing that the love of God caused Him to pay your debt for sin.

There are some who think they are too far gone, they have so messed up their lives that even God wouldn't want them.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Romans 10:13 assures us that, "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord SHALL BE SAVED."  He loves you too much to make it impossible for you to enter Heaven.

Dear friend, if you are reading this you have already asked yourself, "What must I do to have eternal life?"  It's very simple.  Simply ask Jesus to forgive your sin, and He will, and He will give you the gift of God, eternal life.  You will never regret it and the life He gives will never disappoint.

My sincerest prayer is that you will do this today.
